Instructions for the Thesis

Ideation, selection, and approval of your topic

The thesis process begins with the topic selection. It is recommended to discuss topic options during your studies, engage in conversations with thesis supervising teachers and a representative from the working life if available. The goal is to ensure that the thesis conducted in the university of applied sciences are project-oriented and aligned with the real needs of the working life. Project-based work refers to a situation where at least one of the following criteria is fulfilled:

  • a contract is made with the client
  • a supervisor is appointed on behalf of the client
  • a fee is paid for the thesis work

In topic selection, considerations are given to its relevance to the working life, potential novelty, as well as your personal interest and motivation towards the subject. Especially in the case of a higher professional degree thesis, it is essential that it is based on a genuine developmental commission from the working life, primarily from your own workplace.

Once you have decided the topic of your thesis, had a discussion with the commissioning party and/or potential supervisor, and received preliminary approval, submit your topic proposal in Wihi. Note that there may be differences specific to your field of study, so follow the instructions you have been given.

Thesis Agreement or Application for Research Permit for Thesis

At an appropriate point in the start of your thesis, you can make an agreement with the commissioner. The commissioner may have their own agreement practices, or you can use the Vaasa University of Applied Sciences' agreement template, which you can find in the attachments on the starting page.

Especially for theses in the social and health care sector, a research permit is sought in accordance with the organization's practices. The application for a research permit should include, among other things, a completed research plan. When applying for a research permit, you do not need to make a separate commissioning agreement. However, make sure that the various aspects of the commissioning agreement are taken into account in the research plan, such as those related to the publicity, rights, responsibilities, and confidentiality of the work.

Commissioning Agreement Instructions:

Fill in the details in the form. Send the completed agreement form and the email address of the commissioner's representative in Word format to Assistant Lena Svartsjö at lena.svartsjo@vamk.fi. Svartsjö will forward the agreement for electronic signatures to the commissioner, unit manager, and student. The student saves the agreement in Wihi for the supervisor's information.

A good thesis topic is characterized by:

Relevance to one's field of study and professional development

Relevance to the working life, benefits for practical operations, and development in the field

Clear potential for development or research tasks

Possibility to utilize existing knowledge base and previous research in the field

Appropriate level of complexity and scope for the student's capabilities and resources (time, money, resources, knowledge)

Personal interest

Timeliness and novelty

Connection to your own internship and work experiences.
